Very-short-term predictions based on satellite images is a method developed over the last decade in a number of research organisations. Up to now, these forecasts have been operationally mainly in Europe, the US, and Australia.
In cooperation with the Indian research institute NIWE and supported by the German giz and Oldenburg University, Overspeed developed a solar power forecasting method for India, based on the Indian weather satellite INSAT-3d. This method is fully operational and fills the gap between short-term forecasts based on weather data, and extreme short-term predictions based on measure power production. In the respective time domain, the forecasts could be improved by more than 15%.
